OUR HISTORY

The Old Lavender Cottage began many years ago...

Helping my mother tend her roses was not only a delight when I was a child, but a great adventure. I enjoyed the smell of the dirt, the tiny creatures who built their homes in between the petals, and of course, I loved the soft, delicate petals of each rose. Trailing roses, miniature roses, grand yellow roses, and every variation were scattered through our gardens. I began to collect petals my mother discarded, and every now and then, I picked an entire rose, right from the stem, when she wasn't looking.

I began making potpourri with rose petals and my mother's favorite perfume. Potpourri was my favorite gift to give: small, hand-picked batches of fragrant rose petals wrapped in tan pantyhose pieces and ribbon. In addition to potpourri, I began collecting treasures from the beach, interesting stones from the woods, and rusty pieces of metal strewn in my father's burn pile. I loved sticks, varying compositions of dirt, and the earth.

I loved to smell the smooth beach wood I'd collected, and before too long, I was gifted a rock tumbler and a flower press. As you can imagine, things began to take off in terms of my experimentation with the smell of other plants. I began to simmer pots of water filled with basil, lemon, and rosemary. I saved orange peels and dried cranberries for holiday simmer pot gifts for friends. I decorated my home with vases of foraged twigs and dried pampas grass I'd grown.

After many of life's tragedies and successes, I realized my center: a strong connection to nature and a great appreciation of such. I invested in a garden after years of trial and error on my third-floor, poorly-lit apartment patio. Today, you'll find me having morning coffee, listening to birds, and deadheading my basil and marigolds. I've even been known to read my poetry to the spearmint. I'm convinced the spearmint has some poetry of their own.

The Old Lavender Cottage is a place I see in my dreams: a place my skin will age alongside; a place I can plant as far as I can see; and a place I can spend my last, peaceful days. That old cottage is years away, I assume, but until then, I live in that beautiful, tranquil, dream-like state planting tiny seeds, watching them grow, and protecting them from the sun's strongest days and the powerful, Texas stormy nights.

Each batch of herbs is organic, pesticide-free, and hand-tended each day. I tend the garden alone, as it is my true joy in life, so if your package is a bit delayed, please understand this is a single-enchantress operation. I do my best to package orders with recycled materials or things I have around the farm, so if you find a dime-store receipt included in the wrapping of your delicate herbs, please have a chuckle and recycle and re-use as well.

My hope is that you'll create your own fragrant and mystical dried potpourri, arrangement, or simmer-pot magic with these beautiful herbs and foraged items. From time -to-time, I'll find a trinket or special treasure I'll post as well. These treasures are picked from the side of the road, antique shops from Texas to Ohio, and things I've found along my journeys over the years.

I also hope you will enjoy my little bit of modern enchantment and should you have any questions, I'm usually around drying marigold seeds or writing poetry about lost loves. Thank you for taking a stroll through my shop and I look forward to connecting with you. The earth is a beautiful place to call home.

With love,
Green Witch Chantel
